The IKEA Test

You probably saw this amusing but also important news story about researchers based in Singapore who developed robots that can assemble an IKEA chair.

At the moment the robot’s performance is subject to a number of caveats and limitations but developers will continually improve the robots performance and no doubt AI-driven robots will soon assemble IKEA with zen-like agility.

Unless robot developers endow the AIs with an ability to simulate frustration, the robots will forever have a huge advantage over humans — IKEA assembly will never drive them to rage (unless you are a HAL 9000).
