Gondolas a.k.a. Cable Cars as Transit Option

In New York, the proposed East River Skyway would transport commuters between Brooklyn and the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

I’ve always wondered why Canadian cities, especially places like Toronto, haven’t seriously pursued gondolas as part of an integrated transit system. Gondolas avoid the digging of tunnels, can clear existing roadways and water obstacles, and are designed to operate in places that get pretty severe weather, such as Canadian ski resorts.

Curbed has an article, “11 urban gondolas changing the way people move,” that describes gondolas in places like Hong Kong, Singapore and Columbia as well as proposals for projects such as one connecting Brooklyn and lower Manhattan.
