In a recent post (We Create Best When We Create to Help Others), I referenced an article by Adam Grant, a Professor at Wharton, who conducts research into work motivation, job design and a number of other related issues. Recently, the James Dyson Award, an international student design award running in 18 countries as part of its mission to encourage the next generation of design engineers to be creative, challenge and invent, awarded a prize to Edward Linnacre for his Airdrop irrigation invention.

There is so much talent lying untapped in so many organizations where people are not working on breakthrough ideas but are simply refining yesterday’s paradigms. His innovation is low-tech, robust, elegant, and could help solve an issue that has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of many people around the world. That is what I call having impact.
